Trust only matters when there is danger. Of course we trust when there are no stakes, no concerns and no fears. Our cause for cloaking, hedging, shading and confounding is risk.
To be dishonest is to live in constant fear, but also persistent danger. We cannot allay fears without small, precarious first steps. But without them, we remain stuck in the danger, forever frozen in conflicts of our own creation.
I remain forever inspired by Jimmy Carter, inviting Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin to Camp David, talking, cajoling, breaking through barriers. Together, they did not conquer risk, Sadat was murdered. Peace did not spread as hoped.
But together, they found something beautiful and rare. Peace is so much braver than warfare.
