Meditations on Montaigne

59) L’Ivrognerie

Intoxication brought on by alcohol does not interest me much. But I am fascinated by other types of intoxication. We can feel drunk in our thoughts and desires. A simple compliment might have us swimming in a flood of feeling.

That feeling we describe as love is such an intoxication, and it can be among the most addictive. Some people seek out that feeling perpetually, better to be in love than to turn love into an activity or verb. A balance of both would be ideal. Could there be anything better than to have such intoxication forever from someone who loves you back?

Perhaps not. That intoxication if too easy can bring on complacency. Why seek anything else in life when you can bathe in it? Such attitudes have a way of changing people and making them less appealing, even to their beloved. So, the moderate love needs some challenge or even mild disappointment. And this may be why a love never quite satisfied can linger so long.
