Bits and Pieces

Meditations on Montaigne

54) Les Vaines Subtilités

”Great minds are more settled and see things more clearly: they form another category of good believers; by long and reverent research they penetrate through to a deeper, darker light of Scripture and know the sacred and mysterious secret of our ecclesiastical polity.” It has taken me time to appreciate this thought fully. I have had to come up short and miss the point many times to appreciate the need to dwell and linger.

My thoughts are not about Scripture, but about thinkers and writers. I still cannot claim expertise the likes of those who read the original text and all the views of it through centuries. In my continued shallowness I have discovered my own depth.

To what end should I know another writer so well? Only that it helps me understand my own mind and style of writing better. The study I perform and repeat is about me, not him.
